Newsletter #7, 2024/ Pānui-ā-kura #7 (24/05/2024)

Malo lava soifua,
Next week we look forward to Samoan Language Week or Le Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa.
The 2024 theme for Samoa Language Week is ‘Tautua i le alofa, manuia le lumana’i – Serve in love for a blessed future’.  What does the phrase ‘Tautua i le alofa’ mean?  The concept of tautua focuses on the phrase – “Serve in love”.  Love is the driving force of service.  No matter what service looks like or who is doing it, service is accomplished through the power of love.  This year’s theme aims to clearly express the significance of service that is founded on love.  Similarly, the maintenance of language is also achieved through service – through our values of love, respect, and especially in the vā fealoa’i (respectful relationships) that protect Samoan people.  Service begins in the family and continues in schools, villages, churches, in our communities and countries.  Service is a practice that is not exclusive to certain people or ages, but rather, a process that begins at childhood and continues into adulthood.  The ongoing mission is the collective preservation of identity for our children into the future.
If you are interested in demonstrating service and want to help with Samoan Language Week, be sure to contact Ateliana Tiatia as soon as possible.  To everyone else, let’s enjoy the language and culture over the week.
Manuia le vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa,
Fa’afetai lava!

Respect / Whakaute

At the moment we are focusing on the ‘R’ in GRIT meaning respect.  This was highlighted as the number one attribute the community wants instilled in our children and is reflected in our school vision:
A school that provides a localised, bilingual and research based learning environment that grows each learner to show GRIT.
Gospel values
Resect
Inclusion
Team player attributes
What does this look like at school (most examples chosen for a reason, please feel free to talk through with your child how they are going in terms of showing respect):
Respecting others
Is holding the door for others to enter easily.
Is not touching or meddling with others’ bags, lunchboxes or lunches.
Respecting teachers
Is listening to instructions.
Is not calling out or talking when others are speaking.
Respecting equipment
Is being careful with others’ equipment and putting away in the correct spot when you are finished.
Is not leaving a ball on the field you were playing with instead of putting it away.
Respecting the environment
Is tidying your space and putting chairs up at the end of the day.
Is not picking paint of walls or letters of sticker signs.
Respecting the rules of the room or place we are in
Is wearing a hat when playing in summer.
Is not bringing wrappers or litter in lunchboxes (we are picking up 20+ wrappers a day that ‘accidentally’ fall out of lunchboxes).
Respecting others’ decisions
Is supporting others with their decisions.
Is not putting down friends because they chose something you preferred they didn’t.

You can come up with some of your own.  Children displaying respect will be selected as Stars at upcoming assemblies this term!  Please promote and reinforce. Here are the first few Stars showing respect for others, possessions, and the environment.

Student’s Writing on the GRIT Challenge / Te Tuhika o Tētahi Tauira mō te Wero NIWHA
At first, I felt nervous because I saw some obstacles I didn’t want to do, like the pit of doom and the things with water.  Me, Jia and Kingston got lost near the river but then Milly (one of the Year 7s) helped us and showed us the way.  Mrs Snook and Miss McVicar cheered me on so I could do it.  My favourite part was jumping off the bench . It was high.  Mrs Fleming was near us and she was helping us a bit.  I want to do it next year!  It was so fun!

Winter Sport Term 2 / Hākinakina Hōtoke mō Wāhaka 2
Next week we will commence our annual winter sport 6-week block at Hagley Park.  Winter sports will run on Thursday afternoons beginning on the 30th of May through to the 4th of July.  We will be entering two football teams on one netball team this year.

Year 7 & 8 students will depart from St Anne’s at 12:30 and return around 2:40pm.  On Thursdays students are to wear their full school PE kit.  Please note, all football players must wear shin pads and long sports socks.  They are to wear their own football boots, which should be provided from home.  However, running shoes are sufficient. All netball players must wear suitable court shoes and have their fingernails cut short.  No jewellery is to be worn, and earrings must be removed.

We will not be continuing into Term 3 due to the high cost of bus transportation to and from Hagley Park.  Instead we will be focusing on training for the Koru Games.

I would like to extend a big thank you to Matua Te Māio, Mr B and Penny Cherry who have taken on the roles of coaches for two of our teams.  Without their support, these opportunities would not be possible.
