Kia ora koutou,
This week Mr Wichman has been super busy and had no time to write this newsletter so Room 7 and I (Kalista) decided to help him out.
Last week was the start of Mahuru Māori . Mahuru Māori means the whole month of September to try to speak te reo Māori more often or even trying only speaking it. As the start of Mahuru Māori the two bilingual classrooms have joined the ride on this fun but difficult challenge. Here are a few examples of some things that us students have been doing during these last few days; only speaking Māori for one block and greeting, reading more te reo books in our own time and farewell people in te reo.
Speaking of te reo Māori, next week is the one and only Māori Language Week. Te reo Māori has been a big part of our school especially since we were the first bilingual Catholic school in Christchurch last year. So we know that next week is going to be jam packed with tons of activities. Something to look forward to.
Whakanui Pāriha / Parish Celebration – Nā Kalista rāua ko Issy o Rūma 7
What did pirates call Noah’s boat? The Arrrrrrrk!
On Sunday the 22nd of September St James, St Annes, NBC and OLSOTS will have our parish day. It will be a day to bring the four schools together with a Mass, performances, games and food. We will be at Haeata Community Campus, as it is so much bigger than our four churches.
There will be performances so if your child is in any of the following groups please bring your child with their required clothes.
– Jubilate (no uniform needed)
– Hip Hop dance (white uniform from the mid year performances)
– Cheerleading (Black skirt and blue shirt will be provided. Bring any black or blue accessories with black shoes)
– Kapahaka (Just wear you were already wearing)
– Filipino Dance from 2023 Cultural Festival (Need traditional Filipino clothes if you have any)
At the start we will have an hour long mass, (if you are not catholic you can still come and cross your arms at Communion to receive a blessing) after the mass we will have the school performances then games, food and face painting. I’d recommend coming in from 240 Breezes Road. We hope you can come to support.
2025 Plans / Kā Mahere mō 2025 – by Ava and Elsie of Room 7
Mr Wichman and the management team have started work on the St Anne’s classes for the following year. Being part of a bilingual class ourselves is a fun learning experience that has its challenges but what class doesn’t?
Next year, there will be one or maybe two Samoan classes, if more register, and two Māori classes that you can apply for. If you don’t want to be part of a bilingual class, you can stay in a normal class. Although, we highly recommend signing up for a bilingual class as we are currently in one. We have greatly sharpened our Māori since joining the class. The bilingual classes also brings its own perks. You go on lots of trips and experience lots of opportunities that other students don’t get due to the smaller size of the classes and funding. If you are up to the challenge, you can sign up now for next year. Just email Mr Wichman.
Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei. Don’t give up or let small things get in your way. If you are to be defeated, let it be to the biggest mountain.
A special contributor in the office will be leaving soon / Te Weheka o te Hēkeretari – nā Ava rāua ko Elsie o Rūma 7
Sadly, our receptionist, Shelley, has left for a vacation to Europe for six weeks.
Two weeks now, two during the school break and two weeks next term in total. Ben Tolra’s great aunt Jude, will be filling in for Shelley. She is a retired receptionist who still knows how to pay the staff and the bills using our system. When Shelley comes back from her exciting trip, she will be back in the office working hard like she used to. Please be kind and welcoming to Jude during her time here.
We wish safe travels for Shelley!

New Breakout Spaces / Kā Wāhi Hōu by Eve and Kaitlyn of Rūma 7
What’s happening to our cloakrooms?
On Wednesday the 11th of September Dominion Flooring came into the school to start renovations on our cloak bays and storage rooms to make more work spaces for teacher aides to help students.
Dominion flooring has been putting carpet tiles on the floor and putting Autex on the walls which are both sound absorbing, so it will be a nice quiet space for students to work. There will be three new spaces.
So where will our bags go?
Our bags will be put in some new cubbies coming in the holidays. This reminds me of a joke, ‘What did the carpet say to the floor when it was in trouble? Don’t worry I got you covered.’

Making a Splash / Pōhutu ana – by Tai and Niko of Room 7
Last Week on Monday St Anne’s School students from Years 1 to Year 6 traveled to Te Pou Toetoe / Linwood Pool to learn how to swim. They started last Monday and are finishing today with the boat safety.
The pool is located at 141 Smith Street Linwood if you want to take your children again. Linwood Pool possesses a Hot tub, baby pool, manu pool, the kid pool and the big pool. Years 1 – 4 were very excited about the experience. Last year instead of swimming year 7 and 8 did different activities like river safety at The Groynes and beach safety at Sumner. I don’t think the parents would have liked drying the gear for two weeks so thanks to you all.
The Envirosaints / Ko Te Envirosaints – nā Aidel rāua ko Lawrence o Rūma 7
The Envirosaints have been going around the classes teaching students about the environment and how to help this week. The students learned about what rubbish does to the earth and what they can do to help.
The Faith team is a team that was created by Mrs Fleming. They organize Mass jobs, help St Vinnies, do Peer Mediation, and they will help in any way they can. Envirosaints is also created by the Faith Team who helps the environment by going around every lunch in gold shirts to pick up rubbish.
Be part of the solution, not the pollution. If you help the earth, you’re putting one small piece of the puzzle to help make the world a better place.
Tama Mai Saute – by Ben of Room 7
Every Monday at midday, Noah and Albany of Tama Mai Saute come to our school to instruct a newly created pacifica group, dances and songs. Their first week was two weeks ago.
The group was formed with students that want to ‘give it a go’. The school thought that if we have an optional kapa haka group that they should have an optional pacifica group too.
In term Four, there will be a Tama Mai Saute performance but more on this closer to the performance. It’s not too late to sign up.

Koru Games – Nā Rydah rāua ko Deakyn o Rūma 7
In Week Ten, on Tuesday, most of the Year Seven and Eight students are going to the Koru Games which is based in Lincoln and Rolleston.
The Koru Games is a South Island Year Seven and Eight multi-day sports tournament hosted by Selwyn Sports Trust. We are traveling there and back by bus and vans. We are participating in Kī o Rahi, Volleyball and Ultimate Frisbee, but there are many other sports.
The Volleyball teams were victorious about ten times in the past, but it really depends on how you play at the tournament.
Good luck to all of those that made it to the Koru Games and try to bring home the gold!

Basketball (Years 5/6) / Pāhiketepōro (Tau Kura 5/6) from Facebook post
It was the final game on Tuesday for the St Annes 5/6 Saints. They played so well, winning 16-6. A fabulous two terms for this talented team winning most of their games. Big thanks to Nathan Gould for training them and Penny for coordinating.
