Newsletter #10 / Pānui-ā-kura #10 (05/07/2024)

Kā mihi o te wā o Matariki ki a koutou katoa,

It seems everyone is jumping on the Matariki bandwagon this year, and we think it’s great. What a cool time to spend as a family. As a school, we made a day of it on Monday. We end the term with lots of great memories of it and the whole year so far. Maybe take some time to go back through the school year on the school’s Facebook Page with your child and look at the pictures and activities of the year so far. I don’t support social media for much but this would be a great way these holidays of talking about things that have happened.
Well done to Daniel for his first term completed in Room 4. He is flying along now and a real asset to the team. We will miss Dean Isherwood for the term and hope he has the best time (more below)! We have productions and many other exciting events coming over the rest of the year, not to mention a few secret things coming,  but for now, we hope your children have a relaxing break and we look forward to seeing them next term.

Reports / Kā Pūroko
Hopefully these made it home sometime between Wednesday and Friday this week. If not, contact your child’s teacher and they can email you a pdf until we can reprint again at the start of the term. Please take the time to sit down and read with your child. Celebrate and make goals together (that’s what we do during the Māori New Year). I would like the thank the teachers for the hours of work that go into these. We had learning conferences near the end of term one, reports the end of term two, we will have another set of learning conferences near the end of term three and then another set of reports to finish the year.

Give It Heaps Dean / Karawhiua Dean
Dean Isherwood, our Deputy Principal, is on a programme called Te Pae Kahuraki next term. This is a Māori immersion, term long programme to improve language competency, cultural knowledge, history and tikanga understandings. We have been fortunate enough to have four staff members participate in versions of this is in the past and all four grew so much. We look forward to his return and growth also. We welcome Ateliana Tiatia to briefly come out of her role to teach Room 8 in Dean’s absence. She will be back in force in term four to continue the setup for the bilingual Samoan room/s for 2025 when Dean returns.

Catholic Convention / Hui Katorika
During week 8, Clara Fleming (DRS), Marian Jones (Bishop’s rep on the School Board) and Dallas Wichman (Principal) attended the New Zealand Catholic Education Convention in Wellington. They heard from guest speakers such as Tim Wilson (journalist), Dr Sandra Cullen (Ireland), Joe Paprocki (America), Manuel Beazley (NZ), alongside the talented Sonny Ngatai. They enjoyed learning with 700 other Catholic school leaders for the three days.
